Conversations is the debut album by London-based group Woman's Hour. This album is mixture of indie pop, alternative and electronic pop. Adding swooning synths, clipped rhythms, and muted guitars, Conversations is new wave with a twist of some nocturnal R&B and soft disco. Unbroken Sequence 3:33. Conversations 3:20. To the End 4:27. Conversations, the debut album by the London-based quartet Woman's Hour, is 42 well-crafted minutes of sophisticated modern pop that fits somewhere between the spare beauty of the xx and the glittering pop of Chvrches. The group concocts a smoothly atmospheric sound that's built around swooning synths, clipped rhythms, and muted guitars, with a pronounced new wave influence, but also adding some nocturnal R&B and silky soft disco for good measure. On their excellent debut album Conversations, this has the intricate construction and intimacy of The xx and the iridescent shimmer of summer-defining indie pop. Pay attention now, or regret it later. Womans Hour. Release date: 14 July 2014. Country: United Kingdom. Theres a relatively simplistic formula at work on the debut long-player from Womans Hour, but its executed with finesse, sensitivity and a richly opaque narrative that allures and ultimately binds the listener from start to finish. The bands longer-than-average gestation period is revealed to be something of an asset: its three years since their first tracks dropped, time theyve used to tighten up and refine an early DIY twee into an emotive pull and weld lo-fi arrangements int. In the case of Womans Hour, everything centers on vocalist Fiona Burgess, who brings human tenderness to subtle but stunning songs such as the title track, To the End, Two Sides of You, and Devotion. Even when the rhythms bounce upward, surprisingly on Darkest Place earning comparisons to Beach House and more expectedly on Her Ghost and The Day That Needs Defending, Burgess brings a vulnerability that adds further dimensions to everything she touches. As a debut album, Conversations sounds unusually assured and experienced, as if the band must be hiding something on their shelves. The first clue comes in the name of the London-based four-piece, taken from a beloved female-focused news and culture show on BBC Radio 4. The second is in their graphic, striking monochrome visuals, meticulously curated in collaboration with TATE and MOMA certified fine artists Oliver Chanarin and Adam Bromberg. These play with shape and texture, much like their powerful, iridescent music.
