Album
Jazz at Santa Monica '72 is a 1972 live album by the American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, recorded at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium accompanied by a jazz trio led by the pianist Tommy Flanagan, and the Count Basie Orchestra. This concert was initially sold through mail order by the jazz producer and impresario, Norman Granz, as a three-LP set. The success of the album led to Granz founding Pablo Records, his first record label since Verve Records, which he had sold to MGM. Together with Basie-trombonist Al Grey they formed the Jazz at the Philharmonic All-Stars and play wonderfully on three jams listen to Elridge's break on In a Mellow Tone and a ballad medley. In addition there are four selections from Basie's band featuring the tenor of Jimmy Forrest, trumpeter Pete Minger and altoist Curtis Peagler, a full set from Fitzgerald and a Peterson-Brown duet on You Are My Sunshine. In 1975, jazz impresario Norman Granz released a 4LP boxed set of concert recordings from 1967 and called it The Greatest Jazz Concert in the World , a slight exaggeration as the material was taken from a number of live dates. Good though that set iswas, Granz perhaps could and should have used that grandiose title for his release from a couple of years earlier, Jazz at the Santa Monic Civic 72
