Jazz Goes to College is a 1954 album documenting the North American college tour of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. It was Dave Brubeck's first album for Columbia Records. He was joined by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, double bassist Bob Bates, and drummer Joe Dodge. The album was re-released on CD and cassette under the Columbia imprint in 1991 and on CD by Sony International in 2000. Most Dave Brubeck records are well worth acquiring, particularly concert albums, so it seems odd that this frequently superb outing has not yet been reissued in full on CD. The Dave Brubeck Quartet was an American modern jazz group formed in San Francisco in 1951 by jazz pianist Dave Brubeck 1920-2012. In what became known as the band's classic line-up, the band featured Joe Morello 19282011 on read more. Similar Artists. Play all. Dave Brubeck. 651,666 listeners. Charles Mingus. Learn more. Here is another outstanding deep cut from the 20th century. Since my years after his successful first album for Columbia Records in 1954, Jazz Goes to College, the Dave Brubeck Quartet - with two new faces - recorded a followup campus concert album, this one recorded at two California junior college campuses in Fullerton and Long Beach in 1957. In addition to Brubeck and Paul Desmond, the group featured Norman Bates on bass, and Joe Morello on drums. The expanded album - Jazz Goes to Junior College - features two additional tracks recorded at UC Berkeley with Joe Dodge on drums. Those tracks are At the Perfume Counter and Stardust. Also, at the time this album was released Eugene was yet to take over bass - Norman Bates is the bassist on this one. Like all Brubeck Quartet albums I believe the central and unifying force was always Paul Desmond and he is in amazing form on this album. Although I am more of a Lester Young and tenor sax fan, Desmond's melodic playing and amazing tone never fail to draw me in. Goes To Junior College. 180 Gr. New Sealed. LP Condition: New.
