Michael Bohrmann aka Steril needed five years to release a new record. A long period like this contrasts with the habit of DJ / producers that today put on the market their creations far too quickly, without worrying that they make sense. We do not know the exact reason, but it is legitimate to think that he preferred to wait for the appropriate time and did not post new stuff for the sole aim to be amongst new releases, just to make others believe he exists. Artistically, something exists when you have something to say, and not when your name appears in weekly online portals. The creative process should be neither forced nor timed to meet other needs.

His current new EP builds upon the insights and qualities he has already shown in his past career: minimalist Synth Pop melodies are perfectly balanced with Electro rhythms, a combination for example shown in 'Rogue Missile' that led him to be noticed first by Mooner and then DJ Hell. "Gamma Dawn" is similar, with riffs of dramatic effects, the perfect reminder of the most intense and lucky years of International Deejay Gigolo Records. With "Erstschlag" he also revitalizes the Electro / Techno "Klinique EP" (on Lasergun), but especially the one that channeled the Müller Records Beroshima in the guise of Latex (look for the song "Encore"), which at the time inspired an entire generation of producers. Closing with "Orbital Bombardment", showing his passion for Electro Funk Techno of the 90s, breaking rhythms contrasting with broken synthesizers, classic rhythmic elements (cowbell , rimshot) emphasizing his old school training.

Welcome back Steril. Maybe it's the right time to release a new Album after "Robofication"? [Giosuè Impellizzeri, Technodisco.it]

It’s a good thing to see that Steril / Latex is still in activity and that a music label such as Schamoni is ready to invest in the manufacturing / distribution of a new EP. I first discovered Michael Borrmann’s work in the early ’00 with the “Robofication EP”, which truly amazed me and is probably very much under rated: a mix of extremely simple melodies / minimal electronics, layered with strange female lyrics. I initially thought I would get bored very quickly, but, despite the demise of Electroclash, I have been regularly listening to this album, probably because the compositions are simply very strong. 14 years later, the “Thermonuclear EP” continues the trip, without, the female vocals (to my disappointment, I must admit). Nevertheless, the compositions are still very strong. My hypothesis is that Michael Borrmann is wise enough to wait for true inspiration and release tracks with the right “hook”. Rogue Missile, for instance, is an instant killer, which I enjoy listening at low pitch. For non-English natives, such as me, a bit of googling will tell you more about the meaning of Rogue Missile : “An unwanted erection occurring at an inopportune time”. I don’t know whether the double-meaning is intended or not but I found it very amusing and in the continuity of Steril / Latex past productions. We are now waiting for a new full-length LP, hopefully on Schamoni Records.
