The Missa Luba is a setting of the Latin Mass sung in styles traditional to the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was arranged by Father Guido Haazen, Luba: A Mass Sung In Pure Congolese Style And Native Songs Of The Congo LP, RE, RM, Gat. PCC 606. Sometime between 1956 and 1958 the President of the Catholic Missions Pavilion for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, Mgr. Guffens, S. visited Kamina and requested an audition of the Troubadours. The audition resulted in an invitation to perform in Belgium. In 1958 the choir made a concert tour of Europe, performing in Belgium, Holland, and Germany. Since the Missa Luba was created in 1957, it is highly probable that the mass was set especially for performance on the 1958 concert tour. extract from Doris Anna McDaniel Thesis. Notes by Studs Terkel and Ray Van Steen. Never has a mass been sung in this manner. These young virtuosi feel so patently free. There is a reason. The Missa Luba is a version of the Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs. It was arranged by Father Guido Haazen, a Franciscan Friar from Belgium, and originally performed and recorded in 1958 by Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, a choir of Congolese children from Kamina The Kyrie and the Credo are wholly elaborated like the kasalas which are still performed according to the Ngandanjika Kasai the Sanctus and the Benedictus were inspired by a. magnificent Parting-song in Kiluba. Sung by les troubadours du roi baudouin. Like so many of the other reviewers, I first discovered this album on vinyl in the mid-1960s, when I was in search of old and alternative liturgical music. It's important to note that these pieces are done in a 'pure congolese' style. Among other things, that means they sound much different from the Talisman renderings of modern compositions such as the Baba Yetu Swahili version of the Lord's Prayer. Ref nº: 117343150. The Missa Luba is a unique setting of the Latin Mass, sung in styles traditional to the Democratic Republic of Congo: the Kyrie, for instance, is in the style of a kasala a Luba song of mourning and the Sanctus and the Benedictus are inspired by Bantu farewell songs. In its day, it was the most successful of many world music Masses created around the 1950s and 1960s, becoming even more popular than the 1964 Misa Criolla and the 1966 Misa Flamenca. The Missa Luba was performed for the first time in that very same town in March 1958, the same year it was recorded
