Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70, was composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1945. It was premiered on 3 November 1945 in Leningrad by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Yevgeny Mravinsky. The ninth symphony was originally intended to be a celebration of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II see Eastern Front. The composer declared in October 1943 that the symphony would be a large composition for orchestra, soloists and chorus about the greatness of the Soviet people. Leonard Bernstein said that Shostakovich's 9th Symphony was the lightest of the composer's fifteen symphonies and also the most Haydnesque. Here he - Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphony No. NelsonsBoston 4. 6 out of 5 stars 54. One of the most thrilling musical experiences of my life was seeing Leonard Bernstein and the Chicago Symphony play Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony live. As Bernstein wrung every last ounce of pathos from the slow movement, I found it incredible that anyone could ever have thought this less than great music. Symphony no 9. Don't know if Shostakovich had meant for it to be like this but here is my take on this symphony. Don't know if I have got this right or not What is everyone else's opinion on this symphony. I heard Leonard Bernstein refer to Shostakovich's 9th as an anti-9th. Where Beethoven, Schubert, Dvorak, Bruckner and Mahler aspire to great heights while making their final statement, Shostakovich opts for something quite different. I think that the genius of the Shostakovich's 9th is that it is both light and heavy at the same time
